The highly anticipated 2021 Australian Interior Design Awards shortlist has been announced, with 190 projects recognised for excellence in interior design. In terms of scale, it’s very appealing because it achieves so much in such a small space. The designer has respected the building and celebrated the original architecture by John Mockridge, elevating it to a whole other level. The awards winners will be announced 9 days before Australia Day, enabling us to shine a spotlight on those projects that are building a stronger, more inclusive, and more sustainable Australia.

The 1999 program was put on hold while Standards Australia explored other options to secure the future of the awards. The majority of staff was made redundant and for the first time in many years, no Design Awards were presented in Australia. The Design Institute of Australia was approached to take over the program but declined the financial commitment.

The DIA's awards are presented and backed by the DIA—the nation's peak design sector association (and not-for-profit), which is owned by member designers. The three entry categories have been differentiated to reflect the cross-disciplinary opportunities presented to Australian designers today. Jurors are eminent designers working with a convenor appointed by the Design Institute of Australia. The 2022 jurors were buoyed by a focus on public projects’ relationship to their communities, ahead of their architecture. The NSW Australian Institute of Architects Chapter Prizes and Honour Awards were announced on 2 December, celebrating the achievements of individuals and practices across the state’s architectural community.
